Summer Reads

In June, I introduced chapter books to our Kindergartners;
long books, with more words than pictures.
Every day after lunch, we dim the lights and the children take off their shoes
and lay on the carpet and listen as I read.

We started with Beverly Cleary's 'Ramona the Pest', about a 5 year-old who's beginning Kindergarten.
Eight chapters and 192 pages later, we were discussing which book to read next!

Charlotte's Web, an E.B. White classic, was our second book.
22 chapters and 184 pages later, we were talking about our third chapter book of the summer!!

The Mouse and the Motorcycle was our third read!
13 chapters and 158 pages later, we were kissing our brains for being such good listeners and talking about our fourth, and likely final book of the summer.

Kate DiCamillo's 'Mercy Watson: Something Wonky This Way Comes' was such a fun, quick read, that we were able to finish the 13 chapters and 86 pages in one sitting.

Rising Kindergartners - kiss your brain!! You've listened to 56 Chapters and 620 pages thus far!! :)

Our 5th and final chapter book of the summer will begin on Monday - Ronald Dahl's 'The Fantastic Mr. Fox'

I am SO PROUD of our little ones for listening so intently. Every day before the story, we review what we've read so far. The children are doing such a good job and I believe they enjoy it too!

Ambulance Visit!

On Tuesday, an Ambulance and Paramedics visited LRSC
to let us know about all they do to help those in need!!

We saw a stretcher,

a heart monitor,

asked questions,

and were reminded what to do in an emergency.
Dial 9-1-1

Superhero Week - A visit from the Fire Station!

The Memphis Fire Department visited our camp on Monday, kicking off our Superhero Week.

We talked about the number to call in case of an emergency (911),

we observed the tools firemen use to get into a roof or wall where they need access,

and we saw what a firemen looks like in full uniform.

Using our Senses with Executive Chef, Jordan Buchanan!

On Friday, July18, our campers had the pleasure of a presentation by Executive Chef, Jordan Buchanan (father of June 4K, and husband of Allison Buchanan, lead teacher in K2).

During the week we explored our 5 Senses, but until Friday,
had not been able to utilize our sense of taste.

Thanks to Chef Buchanan, also and instructor at L'Ecole Culinaire,
campers tested a variety of fruits including -

Dragon Fruit,

Asian Pear,

Prickly Pear,

Lychees,

and Pomegranate.

Chef Buchanan has graciously provided L'Ecole Presentation Room
lunch and dinner coupons, as well as public cooking classes at L'Ecole Culinaire.

Information is available in the Holy Rosary Teachers' Lounge. If you'd like us to send info home with your camper, please let us know!

Erupting Play Dough

Friday, our Kindergartners mixed food coloring with baking soda. We stirred until the colors blended with the soft, salty soda.

We added a little splash of water, and watched for a reaction. There was none,
so we stirred some more.

Next we added a few squirts of baby lotion. Still no reaction. We stirred some more.

The lotion made our soda solution stick together. We took it out of our cups
and squished and squeezed the dough in our hands and on the table.
It smelled sweet and felt soft.

After we got good and messy, we packed some of our dough into small cups.
Mrs. Douglas opened a jar of vinegar and we smelled the clear liquid.
Some students liked the smell and others did not.

We counted down from 10 and poured cups of vinegar on top of our dough.

It sizzled and fizzled and bubbled and ran right over the edge of our cups, spilling onto the table!!

Icky Sticky Ooey Gooey Science!

Today our campers became scientists and conducted an experiment!

Using baking soda, food coloring, water and lotion, we made dough.

We used our senses of touch, sight and smell as we mixed our messy lotion potion!

After getting good and messy, we turned on our sense of smell and sniffed the cups of vinegar we'd pour onto our play dough.

Counting down from 10, we poured the vinegar into our cups of dough, watching it bubble and sizzle, pouring over the sides of our cups.
